‘66 Convertible Four-speed with Hardtop
This nearly-original numbers-matching C2 looks immaculate
This ‘66 Trophy Blue Metallic convertible looks to me like a gorgeous C2 with an exterior color that I didn’t know was available in that year and can’t remember ever seeing. It has a numbers-matching drivetrain, is listed for sale in the Seattle area for $66,000, and appears to be a turn-key car.
The car presents beautifully in the Trophy Blue factory color (paint code 980) with a black convertible top, but this is not the original color. Examining the Trim Tag photo in the listing reveals that this car is one of 2,339 C2s ordered that year in Sunfire Yellow. Although the yellow also looks good on these cars, I frankly prefer the current color.
The paint looks to be in excellent condition and, from the supplied photos, the fiberglass shows no evidence of stress cracks and the frame looks solid. The trim and glass seem to be excellent, and the optional side exhaust adds to the car’s visual appeal.
A really nice bonus is the color-matched factory hardtop for all-weather protection. I can personally attest to the fact that the hardtop seals out the wind and cold during late autumn drives in northern portions of the country.
The immaculate interior continues the positive impression exuded by the exterior. I can’t find any deficiencies regarding the black vinyl seats, door panels, or interior trim. The carpet seems to be free from fading, the dash and plastic look excellent, and the gauges feature clear lenses and crisp markings. It appears that someone has fitted an aftermarket stereo, but since they haven’t cut anything during the installation, reversal should be fairly easy.
I’m always pleased to see that the original chrome shifter with reverse lockout for the four-speed manual transmission has been retained.
The entry-level 327 cu. in. engine produced 300 horsepower and 350 ft/lbs of torque. With the manual transmission, this combination should provide more than adequate performance for this 3,181 lb. C2. Although the ad description doesn’t provide any indication of how this car runs and drives, the overall appearance and clean engine bay might portend a nice-running car.
This numbers-matching classic isn’t totally original due to the color change, but as a high-end driver, the overall quality is impressive and should turn heads wherever it’s taken. I feel that the asking price is aligned with the current market for these cars, and this C2 should sell fairly quickly.
