‘66 Coupe: Two-owner Survivor
Looks like a really nice C2, but no mention of documentation or records
This ‘66 coupe has three elements that provide desirability: originality, only two owners, and low mileage. A classic vehicle’s history backed up by documentation and records is important when evaluating value, but there’s no mention of this in the ad description for this car.
This C2 is a two-owner vehicle, with the second owner buying it way back in 1970. A Corvette that has been maintained by a single owner for over five decades is usually a sign that it’s been well cared for.
The original buyer ordered this Corvette with a Silver Pearl exterior, a color chosen by 2,967 buyers. The Craigslist ad states: “Still retains the correct color Silver Pearl Exterior”. The paint looks very good, but this makes me ponder whether this is the original paint (which I find unlikely), or if it’s a re-paint in the original color. Maybe it’s just me, but if I was a buyer at $80k, I’d like to know this.
The ad further states: “This is a well preserved car and is a very nice driver, highly original example. …This is one of very few that come up for sale that haven't been modified.” Well, maybe not modified, but “a lot of original components” makes me wonder which components are not original. Yes, I know I’m probably nitpicking, but what does “$5k worth of full suspension work done less than 1,000 miles ago” mean?
The seller says this is a “2 owner black plate California car” and “78,317 miles, only 2 owners (had same owner since 1970)”. That brings to mind another question. If it’s only had two owners and had the same owner since 1970, it seems to me that the second owner currently owns this car. So why is the ad description written in the third person? Is the person writing this ad selling the car on consignment? All we know is that his name is Mike. As the saying goes: “Inquiring minds want to know”.
If the car’s history can be verified with actual documentation and records, the condition and mileage probably support the asking price. This numbers-matching Corvette should provide the next owner with an enjoyable, pleasant driving experience.
The interior looks to be in excellent condition with spotless carpeting throughout. The black vinyl upholstery is correct and matches the Trim Tag and it appears to be pristine. There is no evidence of wear or physical damage in the cabin, including the dash, console, and plastic. A modern retro-style stereo has been installed, but the original AM/FM radio is included if the next owner wants to retain originality.
The original buyer chose the entry-level 327 cu.in. / 300 hp engine which is more than adequate for this 3,160 lb. coupe. Even the engine’s ignition shielding is still in place. The small-block engine has a four-speed M20 manual transmission behind it.
This ‘66 should provide the next owner with decent handling and acceptable performance. My mantra is “trust, but verify.” I see nothing in the ad description about extensive documentation and records, so it’ll be incumbent on potential buyers to do their due diligence and make sure the car’s presentation and price aligns with the seller’s claims that “originality like this is hard to find.”
