When I think of C2s, the color that always comes to mind is Nassau Blue or Marina Blue. To me, these are the classic colors from this generation Corvette. This ‘66, currently at auction, checks all the boxes for me: originality, color, engine, and transmission. As much as I like the side exhaust on this generation, I also like the clean look of these cars without that option.
This Nassau Blue Sting Ray was once owned by an NCRS master judge and was even used for NCRS training for judges. Between 1998 and 2004, it earned 10 NCRS Top Flight Awards, and in 1999 also received the NCRS Star Award for Preservation Excellence that recognizes Corvettes preserved to a high standard while remaining in original condition.
However, those awards were more than 20 years ago now, and the car currently isn’t in absolutely perfect condition, with various imperfections in the paint pointed out in some of the listing photos.
Despite those minor flaws, I think this C2 coupe looks amazing in its original configuration.
This interior still looks completely original with the correct steering wheel, seats, shifter, and instrument panel. The car is nicely equipped, with power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, telescopic teakwood steering wheel, AM/FM radio, and black leather interior.
The original numbers-matching L36 427/390 horsepower V8 engine has been rebuilt. With 460 lb-ft of torque and mated to a four-speed manual transmission, I can attest that this combo provides substantial power to the rear wheels as it’s the same configuration I had in my ‘67 roadster.
In addition to the engine rebuild, other mechanicals have been refurbished, including the oil cap, ignition shield cover, fuel pump, distributor cap, radiator cap, fan clutch, valve covers, radiator, heater hoses, belts, and plug wires.
The high bid has already hit $45,000 with six days remaining in the auction. For me, this car is pretty much the perfect C2, and I think somebody (with deeper pockets than me!) is going to get a beautiful Sting Ray.
