‘72 Coupe - Automatic with Factory Air
This no reserve auction C3 looks quite original but needs attention in a few areas
This ‘72 t-top coupe in Atlanta is on an auction site with no reserve and bidding ends Thursday, April 17 at 2:47pm. Although there are some details that need attention, this chrome-bumper C3 looks pretty original in the supplied photos.
The Steel Cities Gray exterior, which was one of the ten colors available from the factory in 1972, has been repainted. I would be curious to know whether this was the original color of the car.
In addition to the standard features like the removable roof panels, 15″ Rally wheels, and AM/FM stereo, this car was optioned with power-assisted disc brakes, power steering, power windows, tilt/telescoping steering column, and air conditioning.
There are some cosmetic and functional repairs that haven’t yet been addressed by the seller and will require some attention by the buyer. For example, the vacuum-actuated windshield wiper door doesn’t work, the center stack gauges (clock, oil, temperature, volts, fuel) are not operational, the factory A/C is not cold, and the tires need to be replaced.
Some of the parts that have already been replaced include the brake master cylinder, the water pump, and the fuel pump. The next owner will also have to decide whether to remove or leave the Nova SS faux vents on the hood.
The cabin features bucket seats trimmed in red vinyl and carpets. The carpet is in very poor condition but a replacement carpet set and a driver seat cover are being included in the sale.
This odometer is showing about 41,000 miles but without some history reports or supporting documentation, it’s difficult to verify the actual mileage. As I remember, these odometers were pretty easy to roll back, and I know that was done regularly.
The 350 cubic inch engine was factory rated at 200 net horsepower and shifting is handled by a three-speed turbohydramatic transmission sending power back to a Positraction limited-slip differential.
The pathetic 200 horsepower number is the result of lower compression engines that began the previous year and also a change from measuring power at the engine to measuring it at the rear wheels that started in 1972. In other words, the apparent big drop in horsepower isn’t quite as bad as it seems.
My final thoughts are that the cosmetic and functional issues coupled with the automatic transmission will hold down the final price of this car. The high bid at this writing is $5700, but there’s still almost four days left in the auction.
This could be a good car for a buyer that is willing to invest some time and money to correct the deficiencies. My guess is that it will sell in the low to mid teens.
