‘91 ZR-1: 40,000 Miles with Two Targa Tops
This second-year ZR-1 appears to be in pretty nice condition for the asking price
The C4 ZR-1 provoked a collective swoon among automotive journalists and enthusiasts alike when it was introduced for the 1990 model year. With a top speed of 175 mph, a zero to sixty time under 5 seconds, and handling like a race car, it was like nothing else coming out of American factories.
The C4 ZR-1 remains one of the best performance car bargains of the modern era and sells regularly for under $30,000. This 40K-mile example is listed for $28,000, which seems to me market-correct for a first-year ZR-1 with this mileage.
The ZR-1 package was not inexpensive in 1991 dollars: it added about $30,000 to the price of a basic C4, escalating the price into the $70,000 range.
I can’t find any serious deficiencies with the exterior paint, glass, or wheels, and everything seems completely original. The ad description indicates “no major chips, scratches, or swirls in the paint,” “Interior leather and trim is in great shape,” and that this car “Includes both blue tint and color match targa tops.”
The Z51/FX3 suspension system provided varying levels of shock-absorber damping and the massive brakes were developed by PBR Automotive. The huge tires that filled the wide-body wheel wells kept the increased power on the pavement, while fat anti-roll bars helped with directional stability and precise handling.
The seller states: “Includes service manuals and all service records. I'm the third owner. Clean title and history.”
The basic black interior is in driver-quality condition. The ad claims: “one wear spot on the outbound bolster of the driver seat - it's not a hole, just wear from getting in and out of the vehicle.” But nothing is torn, cracked or missing that I can see from the pictures.
There’s a lot to like about a C4 ZR-1, but the exotic 5.7L engine may be the most important element. It enables acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds and to 100 mph in about 10 seconds. And it did this in 1990.
The ad further states “engine runs very well with impressive torque. Secondary injectors work correctly with power key. Clutch and transmission are in great shape. Steering is tight with no play. Mechanically this ZR is in great shape.” So this sounds like a car that has been well cared for, and the current owner seems to be on top of all the mechanicals.
This ZR-1 appears to be a pretty solid car at a fair price and I’m sure the seller is open to offers.

FYI, $70,000 in 1991 is equivalent to more than $160,000 today.
