‘92 Convertible - 44k Mile 6-speed Manual
This unmodified C4 would be an inexpensive and enjoyable summer car
This ‘92 convertible has the desirable 6-speed manual ZF transmission in a really nice color combo of Polo Green exterior over Saddle leather interior. I owned a bone-stock ‘93 coupe for eight years with the same color combo and transmission and I absolutely loved that car. These fourth-generation models have been under-appreciated for a long time. Finding an unmodified one with a manual transmission is a real challenge these days.
This C4 needs a little attention in a couple areas, but there’s nothing that can’t get sorted out pretty easily. It’s listed for $13,900 in Toms River, New Jersey, but the ad indicates that the price is negotiable. I’m thinking that with the few deficiencies the selling price will probably be between $10k and $12k.
This car does have a few shortcomings, but cosmetically it looks good from the few photos supplied. I’m surprised that there are no photos of the interior, the undercarriage, and the engine. I think those shots would be of huge interest to potential buyers and might facilitate a faster sale.
The seller notes a few different issues: the A/C isn’t functional (might only need recharging); the cruise control is currently inoperative; the stereo needs a new speaker; and the driver’s side window and the convertible top could use new weatherstripping.
From my ownership experience with my ‘93, let me provide a few observations. First, in regard to the stereo and cruise control, I don’t think I used either of these, but they shouldn’t be difficult to fix. Second, with my brother’s help, we replaced the targa top weatherstripping in a few hours for about $125. Finally, although my ‘93 had been converted to R-134a refrigerant, I did need to have it recharged at least once. The A/C system on these cars was not that robust, and with age, it’s not surprising that a small leak could develop.
The LT1 engine in these later C4s produced 300 horsepower, which was more than adequate, especially with the manual transmission. I can attest that the six-speed manual in my ‘93 contributed to a really enjoyable driving experience.
There were a few things that made my ‘93 desirable to me: the overall design of the car, the exterior and interior colors, the LT1 engine, and the ZF six speed manual transmission. The Polo Green / Saddle leather combo reminded me of my ‘67 big-block roadster’s Goodwood Green / Saddle leather combination, and I’ve always loved the exterior C4 design. The LT1/6-speed was just the icing on the cake.
Considering the nice color combo, convertible top, and manual transmission, this C4 would be an attractive summer sports car that could easily be driven for quite a while before making any of the fixes. I still contend that these cars offer phenomenal value in today’s market.
