Flashback Friday: 1997 Ad for '67 Coupes
1997 doesn't seem that long ago. Why couldn't we see where C2 prices were going?
I found a May 1997 issue of Hemmings Motor News a while back that I had saved for posterity for some reason. It’s always interesting to see the prices that cars were being advertised for almost thirty years ago. And of course, of greatest interest to me are the Corvettes.
I should note that Hemmings has a huge international following for their publications and therefore the asking prices for vehicles are usually, shall we say. quite optimistic. So the prices in this ad are definitely higher compared to prices placed in local ads at that time. I believe the publication is still available in hard-copy form in bookstores. (Hemmings is located in Bennington, Vermont, which is only about an hour from where I live in the summer in upstate New York.)
From the ad above, if you take $25,000 as a rough average price of the two ‘67 coupes, that would be equivalent to about $50,000 today. Where can you buy one today for that? I know that as an investment it’s not really that impressive, even though the value of either of these cars in the current market is probably between 60 and 70 thousand dollars.
But assuming you bought one of these cars (and it was solid and original) and you drove it sparingly (as maybe a weekend cruiser), it would be worth more than it cost (even in adjusted dollars) after you had enjoyed it for 28 years!
